About Us
About Us — 20.1 Studios
It started with a hoodie that wouldn't die.
Not a good one. That's the thing. It was cheap, bought in a sale, worn because it was the only thing clean. And somewhere between the third winter and the fourth, it stopped being cheap and started being ours. The cuffs went soft. The colour faded into something the factory never intended. There was a mark near the left pocket that neither of us could explain.
We kept it for eleven years.
That's the hoodie we've been trying to make ever since — except we wanted to skip the eleven years.
The problem with new
Walk into most shops and everything is aggressively, obviously new. Stiff. Uniform. Every piece on the rack identical to the one behind it. You buy it, wear it twice, and it hangs in the wardrobe looking like it's waiting for permission.
Then there's the other end. Distressing sprayed on by machine. Fake fading printed rather than washed. Rips cut with a blade in the same place on every single unit. It's costume. You can spot it from across a room and so can everyone else.
We didn't want either.
So we learned to wash
It took us longer than we'd like to admit. We went through three manufacturers before we found one willing to do it properly — which meant slower runs, smaller batches, and accepting that some pieces would come out different to others.
That last part was the sticking point. Most factories treat variation as a defect. Something to be minimised, corrected, rejected. We had to explain, more than once, that we wanted the variation. That two hoodies coming out of the same wash cycle looking slightly different was the entire reason we were there.
Snow wash. Enzyme wash. Vintage acid wash. Each one does something different to the fibre, and none of them can be perfectly repeated. The piece you receive doesn't exist twice.
Weight matters
We only work in heavyweight cotton — 10 to 12.4 oz, depending on the style. It costs more. It ships heavier. It takes longer to dry.
It's also the difference between a hoodie that holds its shape after fifty washes and one that gives up after five. You can feel it the moment you pick one up, and honestly, that's most of what we'd want you to know about us. Weight is where a garment stops pretending.
Everything else follows from there: reinforced stitching at the stress points, proper hardware, dropped shoulders cut for actual movement rather than a photograph.
We're slow on purpose
We don't drop weekly. We don't run a calendar of manufactured urgency. A piece gets released when it's finished, and if that takes another two months of samples, it takes another two months.
We'd rather sell you one hoodie you wear for four years than four you cycle through in a season. That's not a marketing position. It's just a less exhausting way to run a clothing brand.
What we're actually after
We want you to forget you bought it.
Not immediately — the first few weeks it'll still feel like a purchase. But eventually the fabric softens around your shoulders specifically. The distressing deepens where you actually move. The colour settles into something that belongs to you and nobody else.
That's the point at which it stops being one of our hoodies and starts being one of yours.
We're just trying to get you there faster.
